Cats vs Bears

Standard

By Brayden

Last night,  my family and I went to a Rivercats game against the Fresno Grizzlies.  We got there 20 minutes late but just in time to see the Rivercats score a grand slam in the 1st inning!

The weather in Sacramento was chilly and windy so we put on our sweatshirts right away.  We were sitting right behind home plate and could see really good.

We all got hot dogs for dinner.  My dad got a hot dog called a Dinger Dog and it was the size of 3 hot dogs!  He couldn’t even finish eating it and he loves hot dogs.  The Rivercats were winning 4 to 0 at the end of the second inning.

My cousin, Jaelyn and her boyfriend, John came with us because we had 2 extra tickets.  They didn’t bring sweatshirts so they were freezing – just an excuse to cuddle I think 🙂

I had to go to the bathroom so my dad walked me there.  Right in front of the bathroom I saw someone that looked familiar.  As we got closer I realized that it was Jeff Jenkins and his son Colton.  They told us they were sitting in section 104.  After the bathroom, we went down to where their seats were.  They were sitting near 1st base and it seemed less windy there making it warmer.  We stayed there for a while and then went back to sit with our family.  We eventually all came down to sit with the Jenkins for the end of the game.  The Rivercats scored 2 more runs.

The game ended with the Rivercats winning 6-0.  Who knew a cat could win a fight with a bear! 🙂

Five Years of Blueberries

Standard

By Gracie

On Tuesday we went blueberry picking in Penn Valley.  I chose my title for this blog because we have been going to this farm for five years now.

When we first arrived, we were given buckets to collect the blueberries in.  We were assigned a certain row to pick in.  There were lots of blueberries.  Some were not quite ripe yet but many were ripe.

We started picking on our assigned row.  It got a little tiring and some of us went to sit in the car but I kept picking even though it was warm.  I knew I could do hard things.

We picked 4 quarts of blueberries.  They taste delicious, I know because I ‘sampled’ many of them while picking! My mom paid a little extra for all the ‘samples’.

I am glad I didn’t give up because if I had I might not have been eating blueberries while writing this blog.  Blueberries are my very favorite fruit.  We plan to eat peaches, blueberries and cream for breakfast with the rest of our berries.  Lazy Valley Blueberry Ranch is open 4 more weeks for upick.  We think we might go back again this year for more.  You might want to too 🙂

Venus + Sun = Vun, for us this meant FUN!

Standard

By Gracie

On June 5th an usual event took place in our skies.  The planet Venus cross over the sun.  You could only see it with special glasses or lens and it only happened between 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm.  This event is not expected to happen for another 150 years.  We went down to the Auburn Dam Overlook, where a group of astronomers had set up there telescopes for all to see.  Venus is close to the same size as Earth.  The sun is about 100 times bigger than both.

When I looked through the first telescope I saw a hugh yellow ball with a very small black dot near the bottom left side.  The big ball was the sun and the small dot was Venus.

There were lots of telescopes ther.  Some were tall, some small, some big and some homemade.

Through other telescopes the sun appeared red, green or orange depending on the lens used.

One telescope you did not have to look through.  If projected the image with a mirror onto a screen.  If you look closely you can see it here on the right.

I had a really fun time looking at Venus cross the sun.  It is cool to think that this is the only time I could see this in my whole life.

Big Fish and Long Drives

Standard

Two weeks ago I went fishing with my grandpa, and golfing with my dad.

We met my grandpa at park four, but he could only fit four people on the boat at once, and there were six of us, so we had to take turns. While Gracie, Maddy, and I stayed back on shore to fish, Alex, Lauren, Andrew, and my grandpa all sailed out back into a cove.  Lauren caught three, Alex caught two, and Andrew caught zero but still had a good time. They came back to shore, let all the  fish go, got off the boat, and finally we were off.

Nobody caught a fish for a while, but finally Maddy got bite and caught the first fish, then Gracie caught one, but me and grandpa mostly lost our worms, got stuck on the bottom, or caught a lot of seaweed, until grandpa caught four in a row, and I was left with no fish.

We waited a long time but eventually I caught my very own 3 1/2 pound fish!

At the end of our fishing trip all of us caught a good sized Bass, besides Andrew, but I think he dosen’t really care.

Fishing is now one of my favorite sports after that wonderful and exciting evening.

Two weeks ago I went golfing with my dad

We all met up at the sports lounge in LOP.  Adam and Alex had their own rented golf cart while my dad, Andrew, and I shared one. The hole we started on was hole seven,it was pretty easy, but as we went on the holes got longer and harder. For example, hole seventeen goes on forever, or on hole thirteen you hit from the top of a hill to the other top of another hill. I had a really fun time and hope I can do it again sometime soon. If you ever play the Lake of the Pines golf course make sure you play hole number twelve because that one was my personal favorite hole in the whole entire golf course.  That week was extremely fun and exiting and I hope you can have a great week too.

Science is Everywhere at the Coast!

Standard

Over Memorial Day weekend we went to the California coast near Bodega Bay.  Our local 6th graders go on an annual “6th Grade Science Camp” every May and we didn’t want Brayden to feel like he was missing out on anything so we had our own “Family Science Camp”!  We went with Grandma & Grandpa Bearry in their trailer.  The first place we visited was the UC Davis Marine Biology Lab.  There we had a tour of their facility and learned about what they study there.  In these jars pictured above, we saw fish and other sea life they had studied.  Looks kind of creepy, huh?

Did you know that this is what a whale’s fin looks like on the inside?  It looked like a giant hand even though it is just a single piece on the outside, no fingers.

Gracie holding a Bat Star.  Did you know technically these are called Sea Stars not Star Fish like we have always called them.

Sea Urchin:)

Isn’t the view beautiful?  What you can’t see is that the wind was so strong when we took this picture that we almost blew over.  We didn’t stay long!  Did you know that this coast line of California is one of only three areas in the world that experiences upwelling?  Upwelling is where cool waters from down deep come to the surface.  Here it is water from the Artic that flows along the Continential Shelf south over a 1,000 years before making it here.  This phenomena creates a nutrient rich condition where abundant sea life can flourish.   We never knew that before.

One of the days there we drove south to Point Reyes.  We went to Bear Valley Vistors’ Center.  We went on a short hike with this ranger who told us all about the San Andreas Fault and the earthquake of 1906.  She made it fun by using “junk food analogies”.  She used peanut M&Ms and oreo cookies to teach us about earth’s core and shifting plates.

These two fences were built to recreate how the orginal farm fence that was here moved 16 feet during the earthquake in 1906!

These blue posts mark the line along which the earth split open during that same earthquake.  It was as deep as a cow (her example) but has since filled in with erosion.

We thought the hanging “moss” in this tree was really interesting.  It blew in the wind in a way that would make you think they were soft and light but when we touched it it was very coarse.

Maddy spotted this snake who had made his home in this telephone pole.  It later came all the way out and grandpa even picked it up with a stick.  He said it was a harmless gopher snake.

Gracie has never seen a horse see didn’t like!  She was drawn like a magnet to them as soon as she spotted them.  What she wouldn’t have given to have been able to ride one 😦

While still at Point Reyes, we drove out to a beach where the kids had fun running and playing in the grass covered sand dunes.

One afternoon we drove north of Bodega Bay.  We saw more beautiful coast line as well as wildflowers, arched rocks and a rock formation called Goats Head.

At Shell Beach we explored the tide pools.  However, since we went later in the afternoon we were there at close to high tide.  We were still able to see crabs, muscle and sea snails.  We thought we found a sea star but later realized it was just a red rock.  At least we got to see one at the lab earlier.

Ok, this has to fit in with science somehow, right!  I know, changing a liquid to a solid and back to a liquid again.  Like we said, science is every where 🙂

We also did take a water sample from the Russian River here to test the ph and temperature.

We visited Armstrong Redwood outside of Guerneyville near the Russian River

This tree is called the Parson Jones Tree and is the tallest in the grove.  It is 310 feet tall and is over 1300 years old!

The ground in the grove was covered with a beautiful green carpet of clover.  It was so peaceful, quite and serene there.  It almost seemed magical.

Before heading back home, we made one last hike from our campground to the sea shore.  Despite the fact that the water was a chilly 52 degrees, the kids couldn’t resist playing a game of chase the waves.  Check out those hops of Brayden’s 🙂   We had a great time exploring and learning at our “Family Science Camp”!  Besides, trailer camping beats really camping (i.e. tent camping) any days – thanks G&G.      – Shannon
